Case
Study: "The Results of Chicago's New Energy
& Building Codes"
Presented by Sanford Stein, Partner at Quarles
and Brady
The City of Chicago
enacted a comprehensive new zoning ordinance
in 2004. Developed for the 21st century, the
ordinance provided for new incentives for energy
efficiency, LEED, public transportation, infrastructure
improvements, privatization, culture and education,
and urban density. It may be a good time now
to see if the incentives are working. The City
of Chicago is a large, complex, and established
municipality, and we know that a well organized
city needs political, economic, and regulatory
strength to succeed. Is the new ordinance helping
the City of Chicago to move forward, or is it
holding it back from success? Is Chicago using
the new ordinance to position itself for growth
as it emerges from recession? This webinar will
include a discussion of the results seen thus
far and a review of the major code changes,
such as:
·
Density bonus system
· Fast-tracking of permits
· Sustainability provisions
· Landscape planning
· Pedestrian-friendly protection
